COURSE DESCRIPTION: Advanced Placement European History covers the period of history in Europe from the Renaissance to contemporary Europe. Students will learn the historical and geographical evolution of the Renaissance and the cause and effects of the Reformation and the rise of modern nation-states. Students will examine the balance of power between European nations and the impact of colonialism, mercantilism, and the growth of dynastic states. They will assess the ideas of the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment and their effect on European institutions and traditional thought. Cause and effect is again the focus as students study the French and American Revolutions. Students will examine the first half of the nineteenth century in terms of reaction to liberal revolutionary movements, revolutions that grew out of the French Revolution, and the use of Romanticism to spur nationalism. Industrialization will be examined as well as its relation to the forces of nationalism and capitalism, socialism and communism. Further, students will learn how these forces led to world war. Students will compare and contrast the rise of totalitarian states and the response of the democracies that forced a second world war. Students will examine the development of modern Europe from the Cold War to the fall of communism. Finally, students will follow the evolution of modern Europe into a community bound together by the European Union.
ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS: Students enrolled in this class are expected to finish all assignments on time. AP students are held to the highest standards of integrity. All students and parents/guardians should understand that ANY plagiarized work (essays, tests, DBQs, etc.) will be given a zero, no exceptions. This will negatively impact your grade as well as your reputation amongst the rest of the class. DO NOT DO IT!! You are expected to take the Advanced Placement European History Test. This is a cumulative course; therefore students must continue to review all content covered in previous chapters. The course web site is www.britticus.weebly.com
BEHAVIOR POLICY: Students will treat everyone in class with respect and they will be treated the same way. The College Board expects this class to equal a college survey course in its rigor and depth, so you will be treated as students who are capable of such responsibilities. No late arrival, No truancies, No disruption.
GRADING POLICY: Your grade will be comprised of points earned from historical readings, review assignments, homework, quizzes, multiple choice tests, DBQ’s, essay tests, PowerPoint notes, daily assignments, class participation, oral presentations, practice thesis statements and notebooks.
Grade Scale:
A = 100% - 90%
B = 89% - 80%
C = 79% - 70%
D = 69% - 60%
F = 59% - 0%
HOMEWORK: Homework is an individual assignment unless otherwise noted. All units have a homework assignment; failure to do any portion will result in a zero. In other words, it will not be graded at all if incomplete. You must send homework in with another student or parent when you are absent on a due date. Students MUST e-mail the instructor if they cannot get their homework in the day that it is due. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a zero being given on the homework assignment.
TESTS & QUIZZES: Tests will/can be cumulative in nature. All tests/quizzes should be taken on the assigned day. If you are attending a school approved off campus activity the day of the test/quiz, you must plan to take it before the absence. If students are absent for any other reason, you must take the test the day you return, either before or after school. In either case, you MUST e-mail me or come see me to schedule a time for the make-up test. Make-up tests/quizzes can be a different format than the tests already given. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a zero being given on that test/quiz. Advanced communication is appreciated and highly recommended to avoid any problems.
MATERIALS: You will need a small three ring binder, a blue, black, and red ballpoint pen, #2 pencil, and a highlighter with you at all times in class. You will maintain, at home, a larger notebook to hold all materials received and completed in class. Notebooks will be organized based on the type of assignment. These materials can be checked for a grade at anytime with one day’s notice.
CALENDARS: Each month will have a different daily schedule of activities, due dates, and testing. All students are expected to be ready for that day's activity. Absences are no excuse for not being prepared. Calendars can be adjusted, check the calendar posted in the classroom at the beginning of each week.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: The typical Advanced Placement student is a multi-dimensional person and is encouraged to participate in all school activities. If students are going to miss a class, they must see me to get all assignments and turn in anything that is due while they are gone. Failure to do so will result in a zero on all missed activities.
